Meatballs in Pomegranate Sauce (Keftedes) – recipe – Taste&Create
This is the first recipe that I am making for my the Taste&Create event that I host every month. I have 2 partners, so another post will be coming soon.
When I was randomly paired with Ivy from Kopiaste I was REALLY excited – I love Greek food…at least what little I have tried. So, when I saw her post for Keftedes, I was really excited to try something quite different from the daily meatballs and tomato sauce bit.
These this dish grows on you. Since there are only 2 of us, it took us a few days of left overs to finish this off, and each day they tasted better and better. On the third day (and last day) they tasted the best.
To be honest, the flavors are subtle and intense, but not where I would go with this recipe if I were to make it again. However, the bursts of fresh pomegranate kernels was so delicious and very refreshing with each bite of warm meat!
The meatballs were absolutely delicious, but if I were to make this again, I would change the sauce by:
-use white wine instead of red wine (maybe 2 cups instead of 1)
-use cumin (maybe 1 teaspoon’s worth) instead of Nutmeg
-leav out the milk
My son loved them just the way they were. He ate them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Here’s a link to Ivy’s Meatballs in Pomegranate sauce recipe.
I will definitely be back to her blog to try out more!

I’ve just recently seen pomegranates for sale at my local store and while they are quite pricey ($2.95 EACH) I’ve been wondering what they taste like. I’ve seen them paired with so many different things, I’m confused!
There are as many recipes for keftedes as there are cooks, so it is wide open to interpreation
I am sure that Ivy’s were the “real meal deal”. I love my “sis” blog and all her recipes are made with love for her family
Ivy’s blog is amazing, isn’t it? I have never had keftedes before but after looking at your pictures I really want some right now. Oh I am hungry again :/
Hi Nicole,
You chose one of my favourite recipes and you’ve done a very good job. I’m glad you liked it and I loved the part that your son was having them for breakfast. That reminded me of my eldest son when he was about ten.
I e-mailed you earlier because I wasn’t sure if you received my participation. You will see my comments about the Quiche.
Bye, Ivy
Good job on the dish! If you’re ever in the mood for more Greek food recipes, you just might be interested in my own Greek food blog: http://greekgourmand.blogspot.com/
Be Well,
