My 36 Hour Chocolate Chip Cookie Studio
Yesterday I blogged about the making of chocolate chip cookies for 36 hours, and today I want to show you the “studio” behind the pictures.
A while back, I blogged about my “food porn room being in my dining room.
Well, after seeing that my bedroom had better lighting, I rearranged the whole apartment (I’m not kidding…) and moved our bedroom to the former living room, the living room to the former dining room, and the dining room to our former bedroom. This is possible in German homes because of the lack of closets. (I have a picture of the new dining room somewhere, but just can’t seem to find it..)
Anyways, I feel that my photography has improved because of the massive amounts of natural light.
Here’s my setp-up for yesterday’s blogged photos:
Props I used:
1 3-way white foam board
1 Sheet of white paper
1 Sheet of wax paper
1 small box (1,74cm thick x 4,33cm high) (my box is blacked whited out b/c I don’t want to tell you what medication it is)
Then, to get the desired effect of the background being endless, move the paper and wax paper over the box until it’s up against the white board. And, place the spoon end up on the box to get a better angle.
Then, get down really close and at the same hight of the spoon, focus, and shoot away! I didn’t use a flash. The window was behind me and it was cloudy. If it had been really sunny, I would have been further down the table and pulled my sheer curtains to smooth the light coming in.
Then, for this image:
I just used the wax paper and the white board.
So, why do I use wax paper instead of just white paper??
Wax paper has a softer (less harsh) look to it and doesn’t distract from what I am photograping. But, to give it a whiter color, and not let the wood grain show through as I did in the cookie photo, I placed a sheet of white paper bellow the wax paper.

beautiful photos! i cant believe you are able to rearrange the entire apartment – how wonderful!!
thank you for sharing these tips. i never would have thought wax paper … now i wonder why, when the result is so beautiful.
wow!wonderful photos…..thanks for sharing your experience…it sure was helpful
Thank you, thank you for the tips. I’ve been looking at moderately expensive photography box kits trying to decide what to do and how much to invest, and you’ve shown me how to improve my photography at a fraction of the cost.
I wish I could re-arrange my house that way! Because right now, my kitchen gets the best light. My daughter’s room is good too, but she’s not willing to give it up to indulge her mom’s weird hobby, though she’s willing to let me use it!
now that’s what you call dedication… whew.. the things you do for blogging, huh?
